The Earthworm Sampling Day is a 1-day specialist-led field session teaching volunteers/staff how to survey for earthworms. These events require no previous experience and are great for biological recorders, amateur naturalists, conservationists and students.
This event is entirely field-based practical survey work. Attendees should have a reasonable level of physical fitness and be prepared for any weather – earthworm surveying doesn’t get rained off! These events are endorsed by the Earthworm Society of Britain.
All survey equipment and consumables for these events can be provided by the Biological Recording Company.

The day will involve a specialist-led earthworm site survey, with volunteers (or staff) trained and supervised undertaking a number of different earthworm sampling techniques. This includes using a standardised soil pit sampling method for sampling soil-inhabiting earthworms and undertaking a range of microhabitat searches to establish the earthworm diversity of the sample site. Following the event an Earthworm Site Species List will be produced and shared with all participants.
Earthworm Sampling Days are a fantastic alternative to contracting earthworm surveys as they aim to develop the skills of participants and engage a wider audience with earthworm recording and research.
